"Looking at Life Quality"
The Area VI Board is visiting people who
use Valley Mountain Regional Center
services to talk about their quality of life. The people visited are people who live in situations other than with their family of origin. Most of the people visited live on their own in the
community, in a licensed care facility, or in
a foster home. Each person will have a life quality visit
(LQA) done once every 3 years, if they want
to have one done.
What is LQA?
The LQA is a chance to have a
conversation with a visitor trained to listen
to you, talking about your satisfaction with
your life or your child's life. With your
permission, the visitor will also talk with
other people who are important in your or
your child's life, to get their ideas too. The
visitor will write up a summary of all the
conversations. Summaries will be sent to
you and your Service Coordinator to help you at
your next planning meeting.
What can LQA do for me?
Talking with a LQA visitor lets you express
your thoughts and feelings about your or
your child's life, with someone who is there
just to listen to you. Your conversation and
ideas from other people involved in you or
your child's life are summarized in writing,
to help you in your planning meeting.
When will a visitor contact me?
LQA visits will be scheduled with each
person individually, once every 3 years.
You can also ask the Area Board to do an LQA visit with you. Some people have had an LQA done because they wanted help speaking up in their planning meetings.
Do I need to do anything to get ready
for a visit?
You might want to think about your or your
child's life, and the parts you're happy
about, and the parts where you'd like
changes. The visitor will be asking everyone
the same basic questions, using a
conversation guide that was developed by
the Department of Developmental Services.
The conversation will cover six ways of
thinking about your or your child's life:
choice, relationships, lifestyle, health and
well being, rights, and satisfaction.
You can also decide where you'd prefer to
meet with the visitor. You can invite anyone
you want to include in your or your child's
LQA visit.
Do I have to do the LQA?
NO! You can decide whether or not to meet
with a LQA visitor.
What if I have questions?
If you have any questions about LQA, or
you want to discuss anything after a visit,
contact Dena Hernandez at the Area VI Board
at 209-473-6950, or use FEEDBACK to write us.
